Leonard (Guy Pearce) is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife's killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.
Christopher Nolan’s 2nd film is a neo-noir psychological thriller that established many of the filmmaker’s hallmarks from a nonlinear story structure to an unreliable narrator. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was praised by critics for its nonlinear structure and themes of memory, perception, grief, and self-deception.
The film was a critical and box office hit, earning rave reviews and 2 Oscar nominations and ushered in the next phase of Nolan’s career that included films such as Inception, Interstellar, the Dark Knight trilogy and the biggest film of 2026, The Odyssey.
