Until the invasion of the Americas in the 16th Century, a satisfactory, bright red in textiles was impossible to produce in the Old World. With the conquest of Mexico, cochineal, a powerful and steadfast red dye long used by the Aztecs and quickly prized by the Spanish, soon revolutionized European textile industries. It’s now common knowledge that cochineal is derived from tiny red parasitic insects that live in cacti, but at the time, information about the source of this dye became a coveted state secret of the Spanish Empire. A Perfect Red is a fascinating nonfiction read filled with wild but true stories about an organic dye that once was worth its weight in gold.
