The art of film has long provoked reflection on the ways humans interact with each other and our world. This summer, the PhxArt x Lisa Sette Gallery Summer Films series Politics, People, and Society offers a global view on how politics, cultural + societal beliefs, and other factors inform individual identity, community relations, and sometimes, entire nations and social structures. The series also complements special exhibition Multiple Realities: Experimental Art in the Eastern Bloc, 1960s-1980s, which explores how artists found novel ways to express themselves during a time when art-making was heavily monitored by governmental systems and policies.

A Face in the Crowd chronicles the rise and fall of Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, a boisterous entertainer discovered in an Arkansas drunk tank by Marcia Jeffries, an ambitious local radio producer. His charisma and cunning soon shoot him to the heights of television stardom and political demagoguery, forcing Marcia to grapple with the manipulative, reactionary monster she has created. Directed by Elia Kazan from a screenplay by Budd Schulberg, this incisive satire features an extraordinary debut screen performance by Andy Griffith and offers a glimpse into the complicated—and sometimes problematic—relationship between media and politics in American life.

Presented in English. Estimated runtime 105 min.
