Art Talk – Vitalizing Spaces: Public Art in Phoenix

Public art installations, like Julian and Suzanne Walking (2006) by Julian Opie, provide accessible and inclusive art-engagement experiences. Hear from Danielle Foushée, designer, artist, and ASU professor, and Mitch Menchaca, executive director of the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, during this free presentation as they discuss the vitality of public art in Phoenix and how it enriches the city’s cultural life. Before and after the talk, visitors can stop by the Lemon Art Research Library for a pop-up featuring rare books, periodicals, and other ephemera centered on Julian Opie and the subject of public art.

About the Speakers

Danielle Foushée is a writer, designer, artist, and associate professor at Arizona State University. She is obsessed with the artistry of landscapes and studies, documents, generates, and amplifies grassroots creative expressions across a range of outdoor environments, from uninhabited public lands to dense urban neighborhoods. Foushée’s creative work has been exhibited and/or installed in Seattle, Bellevue, Portland, Vancouver, Reno, Baltimore, and Tempe, among other cities. She has won national and international awards for her work, most recently the Mayor’s Art Award for Community Innovation in the City of Phoenix, Arizona. Foushée founded and is executive director of Phoenix Mural Project, a grassroots community organization that facilitates the creation of new visual expressions in public places, captures local artists’ oral histories, and maintains an extensive archive of murals and street art in the city.

Mitch Menchaca was appointed as the executive director for the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture in 2018. The agency is charged with managing the city’s award-winning public art program, administering grants to artists and arts and culture organizations, and advocating for the arts to demonstrate their economic, social, practical, and educational benefits. Mitch has held leadership and programmatic positions at Arizona Humanities, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Americans for the Arts, the Association of California Symphony Orchestras, and Chorus America. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from Arizona State University.
