Before the internet and social media, print magazines served as one of the primary ways for people to exchange information and build community. As such, Lowrider Magazine, founded in San Jose, CA in the late 1970s holds a special place in the hearts of many Chicanx and Latinx peoples. Fans of Lowrider Magazine know it was so much more than a feature on cars, it was a place to celebrate shared unique culture and heritage.
The Lemon Library has a growing collection of Lowrider Magazine and other rare Chicano publications. Join librarian Jesse Lopez for an in-depth discussion about the history of Lowrider Magazine, Arte del Varrio, Teen Angel, and Lowrider Arte. This program connects to photography exhibition Laura Aguilar: Nudes in Nature, on view in the Norton Photography Gallery.
This program is intended for audiences 18 years and older.
