About the Speakers:

Sybil Venegas is an independent art historian, curator, writer, and Professor Emerita of Chicana/o Studies at East Los Angeles College. She is one of the first art historians to historicize Chicana art and is recognized as an early scholar in Chicana feminist art history, as well as the cultural politics of Dia de los Muertos ceremonials in Chicano/Latino communities. As a commentator on Los Angeles’ curatorial and multicultural visual arts landscape, Venegas’ extensive experience in the Chicana/o art community has spanned the early years of Chicana/o art production to present time. Since 2016 she has co-managed the Laura Aguilar Trust.

Christopher Anthony Velasco is a photographer and performance artist based in Los Angeles. He emphasizes the queer brown body, incorporating horror and camp aesthetics. Christopher received his Master of Fine Arts from University of California (UC), Santa Barbara in 2019 and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts. As a Geay Marrow Undergraduate Intern, Velasco interned at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and University of California, Los Angeles’ Chicano Studies Research Center and Library. Velasco is an adjunct professor at Ventura Community College and Los Angeles Valley College, and an instructor at California State Summer School of the Arts. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Art Center College of Design; Art, Design & Architecture Museum; Avenue 50 Studio; California Institute of the Arts; Hibbleton Gallery; the Geay Center; and the Vincent Price Art Museum.
