March’s Book of the Month is Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology, edited by Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alst Jr. Selected as a spiritual companion to Cara Romero: Panûpünüwügai (Living Light) which is currently on view at PhxArt. This collection celebrates the multiplicity, beauty, and resilience of Native American and Indigenous experiences.

Much like Romero’s work, the 26 short horror stories in this anthology brilliantly challenge dominant narratives of Indigenous decline and erasure. By disrupting preconceived notions of what it means to be Native American, the collection highlights the rich diversity found within Indigenous nations and communities.

As Tananarive Due, author of The Reformatory, writes:

“This groundbreaking anthology showcases to the world that Indigenous horror has many faces, and these powerful stories are a horror lover’s dream: each one singular and heartfelt, carving new storytelling pathways that feel both unique and universal, haunting and healing. It’s impossible to guess what’s coming next, and that unpredictability is so central to why horror is such a powerful genre as we all confront life’s terrors.”

This program is intended for audiences 18 years and older.
