Join artists Carlos Martiel and Luis Rivera Jiménez, and director and professor of the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University, Irasema Coronado, in a conversation about artistic and aesthetic responses to migration, immigration, and displacement, moderated by Alana Hernandez, executive director at CALA Alliance and curator of LatinX art at the ASU Art Museum.
About Carlos Martiel
Carlos Martiel (b. 1989, Havana, Cuba) lives and works in both New York and Havana. He graduated in 2009 from the Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro and studied in the Cátedra Arte de Conducta. Martiel’s works have been included in the Biennial of the Americas, USA; 4th Vancouver Biennale, Canada; 14th Sharjah Biennial, UAE; 14th Cuenca Biennial, Ecuador; 57th Venice Biennale, Italy; Havana Biennial, Cuba, among others. He has received several awards, including the Franklin Furnace Fund in New York, USA, 2016; CIFOS Grants & Commissions Program Award in Miami, USA, 2014; and Arte Laguna in Venice, Italy, 2013. His work has been exhibited at The São Paulo Museum of Art, São Paulo, Brazil; The Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, USA; Zisa Zona Arti Contemporanee, Palermo, Italy; Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, Miami, USA; Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece; National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba; among others. His works are in public and private collections, including The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami; and Museu de Arte do Rio, Rio de Janeiro.
About Alana Hernandez
Alana Hernandez is executive director and curator at CALA Alliance (Celebración Artística de las Américas) and CALA Alliance curator of Latinx Art at ASU Art Museum. As executive director, Hernandez fosters Latinx artistic talent in the Metro-Phoenix region and beyond, while strengthening cultural ties to the Americas. She has recently organized artist projects with Carolina Aranibar-Fernández, Sam Frésquez, and Luis Rivera Jimenez. Previously, Hernandez was assistant curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. She has held curatorial positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Páramo, Guadalajara, Mexico; Hunter East Harlem, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Phoenix Art Museum; and BRIC Arts Media, Brooklyn. Her writing has appeared in several exhibition catalogues and online journals, including HereIn Journal. Hernandez received her M.A. from CUNY Hunter College, where she specialized in modern and contemporary Latin American art.
About Irasema Coronado
Irasema Coronado is the director and professor of the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. She received her bachelor's degree in political science and a certificate of Latin American studies from the University of South Florida. She has an M.A. in Latin American studies and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Arizona. Her area of specialization is comparative politics and the U.S.-Mexico border region. Her research focuses on immigration, human rights, and environmental policy on the border. Her most recent publication is a co-edited book titled Children Crossing Borders: Latin American Migrant Childhoods published by the University of Arizona Press in 2022. She was the recipient of a Fulbright to Germany in 2002, and a Border Fulbright in 2004 at the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez.
About Luis Rivera Jiménez
Luis Rivera Jiménez (b. 1997), Dominican and Puerto Rican. He is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher who works with physical and digital materials to create spaces and experiences for possible reconfigurations of western epistemologies and racial structures. His artistic practice takes “digital global society” as a starting point and borrows language and forms from contemporary art, anarchist political thought, psychoanalysis, and the Caribbean quotidian. This all to post questions within the dynamics of representation, hierarchies, collaboration, context, "poor" materialities, and how to attune them to contemporary material, digital, and racial conditions.

Acerca de Luis Rivera Jiménez
Luis Rivera Jiménez (n. 1997), dominicano y puertorriqueño. Es un artista e investigador multidisciplinario que trabaja con materiales físicos y digitales para crear espacios y experiencias para posibles reconfiguraciones de las epistemologías y estructuras raciales occidentales. Su práctica artística toma como punto de partida la “sociedad global digital” y toma prestados lenguajes y formas del arte contemporáneo, el pensamiento político anarquista, el psicoanálisis y la cotidianidad caribeña. Todo esto para plantear preguntas dentro de las dinámicas de representación, jerarquías, colaboración, contexto, materialidades "pobres" y cómo sintonizarlas con las condiciones materiales, digitales y raciales contemporáneas.
