Juan Francisco Elso’s art conjures a blend of European, African, and Indigenous artistic and cultural traditions to offer a unique perspective on the life and culture of Cuba in particular and the Americas in general.

About the Speakers
Albert Chong (b. 1958) was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1977. He is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation and has received many other awards and fellowships for his work in the visual arts. As an artist of Afro-Jamaican and Chinese descent, he explores cultural, ethnic, and spiritual/mystical identities through works that also reanimate his family history through visual narratives, employing vintage family photographs as the basis for multilayered still-life images. Although his work is based primarily in his photographic art practice, he also creates installations, sculpture, and mixed-media works. He has dual residency in St. Catherine, Jamaica, and Boulder, Colorado, where he teaches photography in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Erica Moiah James PhD, is an art historian, curator, and assistant professor at The University of Miami. Her research centers on Indigenous, modern, and contemporary art of the Caribbean, Americas, and the African Diaspora. She has received several awards and foundation support for her work, including a 2020 Warhol Foundation/Creative Time Writers Grant, a 2020 multi-year Mellon Foundation Research Grant, and a 2021 grant from the Terra Foundation. She is also a non-resident research associate at the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Center at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. Her forthcoming book is titled After Caliban: Caribbean Art in the Global Imaginary.
Reynier Leyva Novo (b. 1983, Havana, Cuba, and based in Houston, Texas) is one of Cuba’s leading conceptual artists. Novo’s practice challenges ideology and symbols of power. His multidisciplinary practice includes mining historical data and official documents, the content of which he transforms into formally minimalist and conceptually charged sculptures and immersive multimedia installations. Novo’s artwork has been presented at the Liverpool Biennial (2010), Venice Biennale (2011, 2017), Havana Biennial (2015, 2019), Shanghai Biennale (2018), Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince, Haiti (2019), and Aichi Triennial (2019), among others. His art is collected by international museums and arts institutions, such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Bronx Museum of Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Pérez Art Museum, Miami; Museo de Bellas Artes de La Habana; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, among others.
Tiona Nekkia McClodden [she/her] is a visual artist, filmmaker, and curator whose work explores and critiques issues at the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and social commentary. McClodden’s interdisciplinary approach traverses documentary film, experimental video, sculpture, and sound installations. Most recently, her work has explored the themes of re-memory and narrative biomythography. Her writing has been featured on the Triple Canopy platform in Artforum, Cultured Magazine, ART 21 Magazine, and many other publications. She is the recipient of a 2021 Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant.
Tiona lives and works in North Philadelphia and is the Founder + Director of Philadelphia-based Conceptual Fade, a micro-gallery and library space centering Black thought + artistic production.
