Celebration from the Underworld, Tony Abeyta
Docent Liz Bauman will discuss Celebration from the Underworld by Diné artist Tony Abeyta. This massive oil on canvas, which famously unfolds as a visual field of Diné cosmology and mythic references, stretches nearly 12 feet long. This is just one of more than 180 works newly gifted to the museum as part of the William P. Healey Collection of Native American Art. Spanning a century of Native American modernity, the collection traces how artists have sustained and reimagined cultural knowledge through familial and pedagogical lineages, storytelling, and ceremony.
Object of the Month is made possible by CMI Gold & Silver.
