Sofia Coppola brings Converse sneakers and a dreamy synth-pop soundtrack to eighteenth-century Versailles for this exuberantly subversive, extravagantly stylized anti-biopic of one of history’s most infamous (and perhaps misunderstood) figures. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated teenage princess Marie Antoinette, who marries the young and indifferent Dauphin of France (Jason Schwartzman), soon to be crowned King Louis XVI. Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defies both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star… which serves only to seal her fate.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the 2006 film was nominated for the Palme d’Or and won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. This fall, a new documentary titled Making Marie Antoinette will be released to mark the occasion. Originally filmed by Sofia Coppola’s late mother, Eleanor, the project was recently completed by Sofia herself.
