United States Naval Reserve WAVES Summer Uniform (Women Accepted for Volunteer Service), Mainbocher

Born Main Rousseau Bocher, Mainbocher was an American fashion designer known for refined couture and exquisite detail. Calling himself a couturier-dressmaker, he aimed to convey “wealth, elegance, and chic restraint.” In 1942, he made a surprising shift from high fashion to designing uniforms for the newly formed Women’s Reserve of the U.S. Navy. Join Docent Hillary Gurley to explore his life and legacy.
