National Theatre Live: Fleabag

National Theatre Live: Fleabag

December 20, 2026 | 1PM

$15 for Members | $20 for Non-Members

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Following a box-office record-breaking run in cinemas in 2019, the one-woman show returns to the big screen this winter at Phoenix Art Museum.

Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

The hilarious, award-winning play that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag, was captured live on stage from London’s West End in 2019.

National Theatre Live is a telecast and not a live performance at the Museum.

National Theatre Live screenings are made possible in part by the Angela and Leonard Singer Endowment for Performing Arts.

In Conversation: Pala Pothupitiye and Dr. Tushara Bindu Gude

In Conversation: Pala Pothupitiye and Dr. Tushara Bindu Gude

Saturday, November 14, 2026

Noon–1 pm

Included with General Admission

Join us for midday conversation on Saturday, November 14, to celebrate the refreshed Dr. Sukumar Nagendran Wing for the Art of Asia and the inaugural installation of the Nagendran Gallery for the Art of Sri Lanka and South Asia, featuring a solo exhibition by celebrated Sri Lankan contemporary artist Pala Pothupitiye. At noon, hear from Pothupitiye and guest curator Dr. Tushara Bindu Gude, as they discuss the artist's practice.

This program will be offered in both English and Sinhala.

About Pala Pothupitiye

Pala Pothupitiye (b. 1972, Sri Lanka) is an internationally recognized contemporary visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice explores tradition, identity, politics, and power. Blending formal fine arts training with a familial lineage of traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship, his work reconfigures cultural motifs to challenge caste-based practices and colonial frameworks. He actively incorporates specialized techniques like traditional metalwork and regional sewing into his contemporary pieces. Pothupitiye is particularly acclaimed for his conceptually layered map series, which reclaims geographical narratives and questions historical authority by cutting, drawing over, and re-stitching official cartography. His politically charged work has been exhibited at major global institutions, including the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan, MACBA in Barcelona Spain, QAGOMA in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. In 2010, he won the First Prize Jury Award at the Sovereign Asian Art Prize. A key builder of Sri Lanka's contemporary art infrastructure, Pothupitiye is the Founder and Chairman of Millennium Art Contemporary (MiAC), driving vital curatorial experimentation. He is also a co-founder and Director of the Theertha International Artists Collective, and co-founder of the Mullegama Art Community, fostering engagement.

About Dr. Tushara Bindu Gude

Tushara Bindu Gude is an art historian based in Charleston, South Carolina, where she is Curator at the Foundation for Spirituality and the Arts. From 2006 through 2022, she served as Associate Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Previously, she served for six years as Assistant Curator of South Asian Art at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Bindu received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her major exhibitions at LACMA include, in 2018-19, The Jeweled Isle: Art of Sri Lanka, the first comprehensive exhibition on Sri Lanka to be organized in the United States. In 2010–11, she curated India’s Fabled City: The Art of Courtly Lucknow, the first significant exhibition to focus on a Mughal successor kingdom. She was co-curator of the exhibition Las Huellas de Buda (Traces of the Buddha) (Museo Nacional de Antropología, Mexico City, 2018,) the first pan-Asian Buddhist exhibition to be held in Mexico City. Bindu’s most recent exhibitions include Realms of the Dharma: Buddhist Arts Across Asia (LACMA, 2025–26) and Indigo: Variations in Blue (Aiken-Rhett House Museum, Charleston, 2026). In addition to various scholarly publications, she has contributed essays to several exhibition catalogs, most recently for Silver and Ceremony from Southern Asia, 1830–1930 (Birmingham Museum of Art, 2025).

The Color of Noir: Blood Simple

The Color of Noir: Blood Simple

November 4, 2026 | 6PM

Free for Members | $10 for Non-Members

Joel and Ethan Coen’s career-long darkly comic road trip through misfit America began with this razor-sharp, hard-boiled neo noir set somewhere in Texas, where a sleazy bar owner releases a torrent of violence with one murderous thought. Actor M. Emmet Walsh looms over the proceedings as a slippery private eye with a yellow suit, a cowboy hat, and no moral compass, and Frances McDormand’s cunning debut performance set her on the road to stardom. The tight scripting and inventive style that have marked the Coens’ work for decades are all here in their first film, in which cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld abandons black-and-white chiaroscuro for neon signs and jukebox colors that combine with Carter Burwell’s haunting score to lurid and thrilling effect.

Blending elements from pulp fiction and low-budget horror flicks, Blood Simple reinvented the film noir for a new generation, marking the arrival of a filmmaking ensemble that would transform the American independent cinema scene.

Leonard (Guy Pearce) is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife's killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.

Christopher Nolan’s 2nd film is a neo-noir psychological thriller that established many of the filmmaker’s hallmarks from a nonlinear story structure to an unreliable narrator. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was praised by critics for its nonlinear structure and themes of memory, perception, grief, and self-deception.

The film was a critical and box office hit, earning rave reviews and 2 Oscar nominations and ushered in the next phase of Nolan’s career that included films such as Inception, Interstellar, the Dark Knight trilogy and the biggest film of 2026, The Odyssey.

Carol follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light.

Directed by Todd Haynes with moving performances from Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, and Kyle Chandler the film was an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, nominated for 6 Academy Awards and received near universal acclaim from critics and audiences upon release.

A skilled Hollywood stuntman, played by Ryan Gosling and known only as “Driver”, moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. Though he projects an icy exterior, lately he's been warming up to a pretty neighbor named Irene and her young son, Benicio. When Irene's husband gets out of jail, he enlists Driver's help in a million-dollar heist. The job goes horribly wrong, and Driver must risk his life to protect Irene and Benicio from the vengeful masterminds behind the robbery.

Drawing inspiration from Michael Mann (Thief) to David Lynch (Mullholland Drive) to Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) Drive has been described as a “tough, hard-edged, neo-noir, art house feature - extremely violent and very stylish, with European art and exploitation influences.” The film is also noted for its retro, 80ish, europop synth soundtrack, command performance from Ryan Gosling and for being a breakthrough film for cult Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn.

Enhance your Luncheon experience with an autographed copy of Fluid: A Fashion Revolution.

Fluid: A Fashion Revolution by Harris Reed and Josh Young

A bold, visually driven history of gender-fluid fashion, Fluid traces the evolution of style beyond the binary―from the flamboyant self-expression of glam rock icons to the groundbreaking designers redefining fashion today.

Led by influential designer Harris Reed, this richly illustrated volume explores how clothing has long served as a powerful tool for identity, rebellion, and transformation. Blending cultural history with contemporary design, the book highlights the figures and movements that challenged traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity, pushing fashion into new territory.

At the heart of the book is Reed’s own work, worn by cultural icons including Harry Styles, Adele, Sam Smith, Iman, and Beyoncé, each look contributing to a wider shift in how fashion communicates identity. Through behind-the-scenes insights, archival references, and striking photography, Fluid reveals the creative process behind garments that challenge convention and spark conversation.

Book will be available for pick-up at the Holiday Luncheon on December 7.

A world beyond your experience! Beyond your imagination!

Long considered unadaptable, Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi masterwork finally made it to the big screen under the visionary guidance of David Lynch. Though heavily hampered by studio interference, Lynch’s Dune stands as a truly unique creation—a glorious failure, a vibrant auteur piece, and an undeniable cult classic. Featuring iconic giant worms crafted by E.T. creator Carlo Rambaldi, a sweeping synth score by Grammy winners Toto, stunning cinematography by Oscar winner Freddie Francis, and a memorable turn by rock legend Sting, it remains a cinematic trip like no other.

In the year 10,191, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. Yet, it exists on only one planet in the entire universe: the vast, unforgiving desert world of Arrakis, also known as Dune. Its native inhabitants, the Fremen, have long awaited a prophecy—the arrival of a messiah who will lead them to true freedom.

Celebrate the singular legacy of David Lynch by experiencing his legendary sci-fi epic back on the big screen, ahead of the theatrical release of Dune: Part Three.

Michael Caine famously told director Brian Henson that he would play the role of Scrooge "like I'm working with the Royal Shakespeare Company" and never do anything "Muppety." Because of this commitment, the film can be enjoyed by adults and children in equal measure—and is widely considered the best cinematic adaptation of this timeless tale.

Kermit the Frog stars as Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk to the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Gonzo steps in as Charles Dickens to narrate the story with the help of Rizzo the Rat, while the beloved cast features Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit, Fozzie Bear as Fozziwig, and Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim. When Scrooge receives visits from the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, they attempt to show him the error of his self-serving ways—though the miserable old man seems entirely past redemption.

Rounding out this holiday masterpiece is an original score by Miles Goodman (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Little Shop of Horrors) alongside unforgettable songs by Oscar-, Emmy-, and Grammy-winning songwriter Paul Williams ("The Rainbow Connection," "Evergreen").
